Which Social Network Dominates Our Lives?

The top internet activity for Americans is social networking. Destinations include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Google+ and Linked, to name a few.

On average, Americans spend 37 minutes each day on social networks. With new social networks continually popping up, our attention is continually spread across several networks.  Social network users access different sites for various purposes, such as sharing photos, updating statuses, or sharing do-it-yourself projects.

Businesses have been using social networks to market to their audience and to improve brand names. However, in the past year, there has been a shift in goals. Instead of trying to acquire more followers or fans, companies are competing for most engagement (likes, shares, comments, etc.).

After an evaluation, researchers were able to conclude which social networks were most engaging for different purposes.

It's no surprise, but Facebook is the most popular and engaging social network today with the largest audience of over 1.2 billion active users per month. Americans (combined) spend 114 billion minutes sharing pictures, updating statuses, and reading news each month on Facebook. Whereas users spend 8 billion minutes on Instagram and 5.3 billion on Twitter.

The shift from computer to mobile is apparent - 60 percent of time spent on social networks is on mobile devices, which boosts the usage of apps such as Snapchat and WhatsApp. Although Snapchat (a messaging app whose message self-destruct in 10 seconds or less) is a smaller network than WhatsApp (another messaging app), people spend more time using Snapchat and it is more engaging.

For the foreseeable future, Facebook continues to dominate social network use, and businesses are learning that quantity is not always better than quality.
