With the rise of cyberbullying among kids, it’s important to take steps to protect your kids from cyberbullies. However, it is just as important to know if your child is cyberbullying other children. Here are some things that you should watch out for that could indicate that your child is a cyberbully.

  • Your normally happy child begins to act angry, defiant, or aggressive
  • Your child is only happy when he/she is on the computer or texting someone
  • Your child’s grades are slipping
  • Your child starts to be secretive about the things he/she does on his/her devices
  • Your child has multiple profiles for one social media network

If you see these behaviors in your child, communicate with your child and express your concern about what you are noticing. Make sure your child understands the consequences of cyberbullying and the difference between cyberbullying and joking. Try and understand the intent of your child’s online communication: is it accidentally being mean or is it intentional? If it still is a problem, ask for the help of teacher, other family members, friends, therapists or religious leaders to help solve the problem.

If your child is cyberbullying another child, make sure you address this with your child. Apologize to those that have been affected by your child’s cyberbullying. Limit the use of digital devices that your child can use.
