Social media is constantly changing and the social media platforms your child likes are changing as well. Years ago, MySpace was one of the most popular social media sites, but now very few people access it compared to Facebook.
Keeping up with the most popular social media sites can be tough, but here is a list of some of the current most popular social media sites for teens and some information about them:

  • Facebook- With around one billion active monthly users, Facebook is by far the most popular social media network. Facebook has the largest number of teen users and half of teens say that they use Facebook more this year than last year.
  • Twitter- Twitter allows users to send short 140-character “tweet” posts that are then shared with their followers. Twitter has become popular because of the ability to follow and be updated on news, celebrities, and other live current events.
  • Snapchat- Snapchat is an app where you can take a picture and send it to friends. The thing that teens like about this app is that the picture “disappears” after the receiver sees the picture, making the picture inaccessible in the future.
  • Tumblr- Tumblr is similar to a blogging site where a user can create a blog and then post pictures and notes on their blog. Users can also read other people’s blogs about certain topics.
  • Instagram- Instagram has become the social media of “prestige” for teens. Users can take pictures and videos and post them to their Instagram profile. Friends can see these pictures and comment on them.

While these are some of the most popular social media sites teens use, they are not the only ones. Other popular social media sites include YouTube (which reaches more teens and young adults than any cable TV network), and Vine (a video-clip sharing site).

While these social media sites are great to connect with one another, they have their risks. Pornographic images and inappropriate content can be passed around by teens. Net Nanny Social can help monitor your child’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and other social media accounts. Net Nanny Social can give you access to view photos and videos posted by your child and monitor your child’s activity with friends. It is a great way to keep your child protected with all the different social media out there.
