This indicates that some Net Nanny files have become corrupt either due to a conflict with another program during installation or due to someone tampering with it. To prevent tampering in the future, you can make the Net Nanny files hidden. Please see http://www.netnanny.com/p/page?sb=techfaq&id=501000000000RET for instructions.

You should also give your kids "limited" user accounts if you are using Windows XP. You can do this from the control panel => Users icon.

You will need to uninstall and reinstall Net Nanny.

Before you reinstall, it is a good idea to go to the Start Menu and do a Windows Update. During download and installation, please make sure that all other programs are turned off on your computer, especially anti-virus software. Also, please make sure you are logged on to the administrator account when you install and configure Net Nanny.

If you cannot uninstall from control panel => add/remove programs, please follow the directions below to delete the registry key. This will allow you to reinstall the program and set a new password. Make sure the new password is between 6-8 characters long. If Net Nanny asks you if you want to overwrite the old files, just answer "Yes to All".

  1. Go to the Start Menu => Run
  2. Type regedit and press "OK". This will open up the Registry Editor.

Please exercise extreme caution in doing the following steps. ANY CHANGES MADE TO THE REGISTRY ARE PERMANENT AND CANNOT BE REVERSED. Changes can also disable your Windows installation, so please be careful!
  3. You should see "My Computer" and 5 drop-down keys, all starting with HKEY.
  4. Click on the + sign next to HKEYLOCALMACHINE. This will drop down another series of keys.
  5. Click on the + sign next to SOFTWARE. This will drop down another series of keys.
  6. Click on the + sign next to Microsoft. This will drop down another series of keys.
  7. Click on the + sign next to Windows. This will drop down another series of keys.
  8. Click on the + sign next to CurrentVersion. This will drop down another series of keys.
  9. Click on the + sign next to Uninstall. This will drop down another series of keys.
  10. You should now see the {51945e07-120d-4e78-a368-c4c8d5042d21} key. Click on it to select it.
  11. Make sure you have the correct key. The full key is:

    HKEY
    LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall{51945e07-120d-4e78-a368-c4c8d5042d21}
  12. Now right-click on the {51945e07-120d-4e78-a368-c4c8d5042d21} key. This will bring up a menu.
  13. Select "delete".

    * Note - Deleting the key won't uninstall Net Nanny. You must follow the rest of these instructions to reinstall Net Nanny. This will overwrite the corrupt files.
  14. Close the Registry Editor by clicking on the X at the top right corner of the screen.
  15. You can now re-install Net Nanny.
