How Bullies Use the Internet

Being aware of what cyberbullies do is half the battle. By knowing the ways bullies use the Internet to harm others, parents can know where to look and what to look for in order to help address the problem quickly and effectively.

Cyberbullying is not just a post on Facebook. Here is a list of the most common ways cyberbullies use the Internet to target their victims, provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

In addition to the graphic above, bullies will also, but are not limited to the following:

  • Upload videos to YouTube that embarrass their victims

  • Create pseudo Facebook accounts acting as their victims, but in a negative light

  • Pretend to be victims in chat rooms, acting in embarrassing ways

  • Share the victim’s personal information in a public forum

  • Post rumors or lies about the victim in a public forum

  • Share embarrassing pictures of the victim in a public forum or through email

  • Use text messages, instant messages, or emails to send mean or threatening messages
