As a Marketing Manager for ContentWatch I never fail to be surprised by interesting statistics about the internet, and this most recent batch is no exception. I came across these stats while reading an article entitled, "Kids give their parents the runround online." Take a look and see if this makes you as uncomfortable as it did me.
- Half of parents with children between 5 and 15 years old feel like their kids know more about the internet than they do.
- 70% of parents of 12-15 year olds feel like their kids know more about the internet than they do.
- Online activity among kids is growing with mobile devices.
- 35% of kids aged 12 to 15 own a smartphone and 23% go online via a game console.
- 41% of kids go online in their bedroom (31% in 2009).
- Parental control usage dropped from 43% in 2009 to 37% in 2010.
- Those who don't have parental controls say they either closely monitor internet usage or trust their kids to follow the rules.
- 74% of households now have the internet at home.
- 54% of kids between 8 and 15 have a social networking profile.
- 41% of adults believe that content online is regulated
