You bring up an important point. This is one of the reasons we're launching a new app soon to monitor social media accounts. I run http://sociallyactive.com/ & we provide social media monitoring services for parents with teens. What we've found to be one of the biggest privacy threat for teens is that the tagging feature. A teen can be tagged in any photo or status post by someone else (and it might not even be related to them at all). So your teen might not be posting personal information, but it can still be leaked by their 'friends'.
